Scalp care and Hair Growth

Introduction

Men and women share a common hair problem—a mechanism of which has been recently becoming clearer through advancements in medical research. Typical alopecia is male pattern baldness, which is related to male hormones and develops as the growth period of the hair cycle becomes shorter. In recent years, therapeutic drugs have been introduced and improvement is expected through treatment. In addition to this, circular alopecia, which is said to be influenced by immunity, and seborrheic dermatitis, which is known as hair loss due to inflammation, are also known as typical alopecia. In recent years, the number of women suffering from thinning hair is increasing, and hair tonic for women is attracting attention.

Apart from hair, there is an increasing need for a nice extension of eyelashes which has led to advancements in product development such as eyelash serums.
Although the relationship between oxidative stress and circular alopecia has been reported, the relationship between oxidative stress and hair growth was still unclear, and the effect of antioxidants—such as fullerene—on hair growth was examined.

Test of Fullerene’s Effect

Methods

With the cooperation of 16 men, a tonic containing 2% Radical Sponge and the tonic that does not contain it were applied twice a day, every morning and evening, to the specified part of the head. Before the start of the application, three months after the start of application, and 6 months after the start of application, the hair growth rate, hair diameter, hair density, and anagen hair percentage of the specified part were measured by photography.

Results

Regarding hair diameter, hair density, and the anagen hair percentage, no change was observed when the tonic formulated with Radical Sponge was applied for six months but it became clear that hair growth rate became 16% faster by as early as after six months. From this result, it was confirmed that fullerene could increase hair growth rate. This was believed to be caused by protecting the cells around the hair follicle from the active oxygen.
